The Story Behind CR-Home…
My wife, Rhonda and I moved to Costa Rica over eight years ago. We had talked about selling our printing business for years but we were simply stuck in a rut… scared to move and yet not able to get ahead. Just staying even.
For us, the catalyst was 9-11. It changed us and forced us to take a hard look at exactly the direction we wanted the rest of our lives to go. We sold our business, our house and literally everything we owned.
And we decided to move to Costa Rica.
Not because we knew someone in the country… and not because we had visited the country several times before…but simply because it represented the exact opposite of what we were leaving behind and to us, it represented a new start.
No, we didn’t speak Spanish nor did we know a single person in the country… we had visited the country previously just once, some 10 years before. And of course, like every other person who has visited the country (and who believes they know everything about Costa Rica) we had researched the internet and that of course, was enough to give us enough background! Suffice it to say that we quickly learned how very, very little we knew about Costa Rica. We were too green to be upset…after all , we were on our “great adventure.”
Those of you who have been here know how misleading the internet can be. But we moved ahead, bought land, settled in a small coffee farm just outside of the town of Grecia, and proceeded to build our first home. We made an awful lot of mistakes, like all newcomers, but we still loved the country, peaceful way of life and the gracious people.
We Have Decided!
And we decided to tell others of our experiences…and eventually that website became the springboard for CR Home. We ended up selling real estate, building homes…and eventually, several smaller developments throughout the country.
I had made the decision… which basically was “this is who I am and what my values stand for” and to always “tell it like it is.” My writings, musings and website got a fair amount of notoriety… from Investors Business Daily to Newsweek to several local online newspapers. The transparency and blunt talk made us popular with a lot of people (and of course, unpopular with others). But it continues to be “who we are” to this day.
We moved from Grecia after it got a little too busy. We moved to one of our developments, Ventanas San Mateo to a quieter area and midway between our two offices. We now are focused almost exclusively on the expansion of our “casitas projects” which we believe represent a totally new and unique direction for real estate in Costa Rica (and maybe even elsewhere eventually!)
Finally, CR Home Was Born!
The people that work with us make up CR Home… without them we are nothing.
We are a family-owned business and we consider our associates a very important part of this family. Because of them, we can react and more importantly, resolve any situation that comes up, because we all are on the same page. That page is our creed in doing business…
"Always do what’s right even if it’s the hardest thing to do”. For this doctrine serves our clients and associates with dignity and virtue…no matter the situation.
Sara Murillo
Sara, believe it or not, came from managing a “serpentarium” or snake farm. She knows everyone in Grecia and the surrounding area and she “knows how to get things done.” Things that stump or infuriate the average person are no more than minor challenges for Sara.
She sneers at bureaucracies and can charm anyone…, and I mean, anyone. She is creative, thinks outside the box, and knows more about the law than any attorney in the country.
She is our “go to person” and can literally do anything from manage construction projects ( which she has done ) to overhaul an engine to pick up the phone and get the head of any major bureaucracy in the country.
It would not surprise me to see her run for mayor…that would be a minor challenge to her.
Charlotte Zumbado
I shouldn’t have to say it, but Charlotte is our daughter.
She is married to a Tico and she has two boys, our grandchildren, Dolan and Logan. Char runs the Grecia office, manages payrolls, bank accounts and a lot more of the detail work that no one else is willing to do.
She has grown into the job despite my criticisms and insistence that she be better than anyone else. Everyone loves Char, her personality and they know that they can count on her to get the job done.
She also schedules visits, makes reservations, and in short, does it all for the office to keep it running.
Hanz Lepik
Hanz comes to us by way of Texas and Oklahoma… and before that the Phillipines, service in the Navy and before that, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.
Hanz is our in house organizational guy… he keeps us on the straight and narrow and ensures that we stay on course.
He is also our resident “techie” and manages to keep both our hardware and software up and running ( which sometimes in Costa Rica takes a minor miracle). Hanz also is kind of like the “man behind the curtain” because I will often ask him to ensure that “certain things get done”… not exactly like an enforcer but kind of a distant cousin.
Bob Weisbecker
Bob is our sales manager who comes from Florida by way of New Jersey. He had a real estate background and has lived in Costa Rica for nearly7 years.
He is married, and has children, both of which are living back in the States. Bob is one of the most conscientious sales people we have ever known..
Bob will always ensure that his clients or potential clients always know not only "the good, bad, and ugly" about Costa Rica but will ensure that they are always aware of their options.
Bob has development experience as well and always ensures that we are aware that the clients' needs come first. In short, Bob is the best.
Cesar Murillo
Cesar is our graphics and design department as well as occasionally taking charge of our fledgling telemarketing area.
He is a native of Grecia (brother of Sara) and related to half of the town of Grecia. He is creative, one of the smartest people we know, works 18 hours a day ( which of course, endears him to all of us ! ) and can do just about anything.
If we need a car fixed... he will know where to go and who to talk to... a new computer... same thing; a connection for airline tickets to Bogata, no problem! Every office needs someone like Cesar.
